One thin outline, sometimes with a few dots or stars, light on the skin and quick to read.
A rose, a bloom, sparkles or a crescent moon add detail around the wings. These pairings have no single agreed meaning, so pick the one that looks right to you.
People choose butterflies for change, for the soul, to remember someone, or simply for how they look. Our meaning guide explains where each reading comes from.

1 × 1 in, which uses 1 space, suits clean outlines on a finger, wrist or ankle. Designs with wing patterns or dots read better at 3 × 3 in (3 spaces) or larger.

Every butterfly design here is a semi-permanent tattoo that develops in 24–48 hours to a blue-black shade, close to tattoo ink, with a tested wear range of 4–22 days depending on placement. The series runs from 1 × 1 in micro outlines for a finger or wrist to detailed swallowtails, dotwork wings and butterflies paired with flowers, stars and crescent moons for the forearm, upper arm or back.
Choose a size for each design, mix it with your own art or a name in the same set, and wear it where you are thinking of getting the tattoo. Our placement guide shows where each style sits best, and our meaning guide explains where the butterfly’s common meanings come from.
For a realistic butterfly temporary tattoo, choose a design with stippled shading, like the Stippled Butterfly at 3 × 3 in or the Detailed Swallowtail Butterfly at 4 × 4 in. The dots and lines print in one solid ink and develop in 24–48 hours to a blue-black shade, close to tattoo ink.
