Wedding and Bachelorette Temporary Tattoos: 13 Ideas and When to Apply Them
For a wedding or a bachelorette you can have almost anything printed as a custom temporary tattoo: the date, your initials, a line in your partner’s handwriting, one design for the whole group. Two things decide the plan. Ours are semi-permanent: they darken over 24–48 hours to a blue-black shade, close to tattoo ink, so they go on at least 48 hours before the photos, not that morning, and in our tests fading usually starts 4–22 days later depending on the spot, which we call the tested wear range. And they take time to arrive: order at least 3 weeks ahead, or 4 if you want to test one first.

What works, and what doesn’t
| Your plan | Does it work? |
|---|---|
| The couple wearing one in the wedding photos | Yes, if it goes on at least 48 hours before the photos; the morning two days before is safest. |
| A bachelorette or bachelor weekend | Yes. Apply it 2–3 days before you leave and it should still be there for a weekend trip. |
| Handing them out at a gathering 2–3 days before (a welcome party or a night out together) | Yes. Everyone’s has developed by the wedding. |
| Guests putting them on at the reception | Not for that night. They darken over the next two days. |
When to order and when to apply
Orders ship within 2 business days and U.S. delivery usually takes 8–12 days after that, so the package alone can take about two weeks, sometimes more. That is why 3 weeks is the minimum. 4 weeks leaves room to try one, not to reorder after the try; if you want time to change the design and order again, start about 2 weeks earlier. There is also an express shipping option (see our shipping policy).
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 4 weeks before (3 at the latest) | Finish the design and order, with one extra to test |
| As soon as it arrives | Apply the test piece somewhere your outfit will cover, such as the upper thigh or hip, and look at it after 48 hours |
| 5 days before | Wax or shave the spot |
| 3 days before | Exfoliate and do any spray tan or self-tanner |
| 2 days before, in the morning | Wet the clean skin with the moist pad and apply, with no lotion or oil on the spot. If the skin is still red, put it on a spot you didn’t wax rather than waiting. |
| The day | Don’t shave or scrub over it; makeup and body lotion go around it, not over it |
The test goes somewhere covered because it will probably still be there on the day. The order matters because exfoliating and lotion both wear a semi-permanent tattoo down: dermatologists advise exfoliating before self-tanner (American Academy of Dermatology), so the scrub and the tan come first and the tattoo last. Three in four bachelorette parties take place within a month of the wedding (The Knot), so one order can often cover both; count the 3 weeks back from the bachelorette, whichever comes first.
For the couple
1. The date on the inner wrist

The wedding date in small numbers, where it shows when you hold the bouquet. Settle the format before you order: 06.14.26 is June 14 in the U.S., but most other countries put the day first, so guests from abroad may stumble over it. Our date tattoo ideas compare numbers, Roman numerals and words at this size, and you can type your wedding date to see it at real size.
2. Each other’s initial

A single serif capital on each of you, each wearing the other’s initial. One letter is small enough for the wrist and easy to cover at work afterwards.
3. A thin band where the ring sits

A single line around the ring finger, worn instead of the ring, or just above it. Fingers are washed and rub on everything, so this spot has the shortest tested wear range we measure, 4–7 days. If you’re thinking about a tattooed band for good, that week tells you whether you like the look.
4. A line from your vows, in their handwriting

Three or four words, not a verse, written by your partner on paper and photographed flat in daylight. Keep the small letters near 0.3 in high, the minimum our text editor suggests, so the line stays readable. The handwriting tattoo guide shows how to capture it.
5. A sun and a moon

One of you takes the sun, the other the moon, drawn at the same size and line weight so they read as a set. Small matching tattoos has 35 more pairs.
6. Roman numerals on the forearm

The date in Roman numerals on the forearm, where a rolled shirt sleeve shows it in photos. VI · XIV · MMXXVI is June 14, 2026; write the month, day and year as three groups so the date is easy to read.
For the bridesmaids and the bachelorette
7. The same heart on every wrist

One small outline heart, the same on everyone, so the group reads as a set in photos.
8. “bride” for the bride, the date for everyone else

One design for the bride and one for the group, in the same lettering. A short word or a date fits the wrist; anything longer moves to the forearm.
9. A star on every ankle

The quiet option: easy to show off at the party, and a floor-length dress covers it at the wedding.
10. Two glasses clinking

A pair of champagne glasses in fine line, the same on everyone. It works for the bachelorette and still makes sense the week after.
11. The destination, in one word

The city of the weekend in a light script. Nine letters need the forearm rather than the wrist to stay readable.
12. An inside joke, drawn by one of you

A doodle from the group chat, drawn by whoever in the group draws worst, and uploaded as it is.
For the guests
13. Initials and the date, as a favor

A small design with your initials and the date, on a card at each seat with the three steps printed on it (clean and wet the skin, press and hold, peel off the film) and one more line: “Darkens over two days.” Without that line, someone tries it at the table, sees a faint gray mark and decides it’s broken. Include the pad that comes with each design. If you want guests wearing them on the day, hand them out at a gathering 2–3 days before (a welcome party or a night out together) instead.
On the day, and after
Once the film is off and the color has developed, nothing is left on top of the skin, so there is no shiny edge in photos. What wears it down early is rubbing: a strap, a dress seam or a watch band moving over it all evening, so keep it clear of those. Afterwards it fades as your skin renews itself. Long soaks, scrubbing and oils speed that up, but it takes days, not hours, so pick a spot that also works for the honeymoon and the office. The tested range for each spot is in how long temporary tattoos last.
Questions people ask
Will a temporary tattoo show up in wedding photos?
Yes, once it has developed. Check that your sleeves, gloves or bouquet won’t cover the spot you picked, and keep foundation and body makeup off it.
Can I cover it with makeup if I change my mind?
Yes. A full-coverage body concealer can hide it. Tell your makeup artist where it is.
Will it be gone before the honeymoon?
Probably not. It fades over days, so it will usually still be there for the trip and the first days back at work. Choose the spot with that in mind.
Do they show on darker skin?
Yes, with less contrast than on light skin, because the color is a dark blue-black. A slightly bolder line or a larger size reads better if your group spans skin tones.
Can they be gold, glitter or in color?
No. Every design develops to the same blue-black shade, close to tattoo ink, so gold, glitter and full-color designs aren’t possible. If the theme is a color, carry it in the outfits or the flowers and keep the tattoo as fine line work.
How many do we need for a bachelorette group?
One small design per person, plus a spare or two. A 1 × 1 in design uses 1 space and a set has 15 spaces, so 15 people wearing the same small heart fill one set; the size guide shows how bigger designs count.
